Organic produce has been growing in popularity in recent years, as it is a more sustainable approach in food production. Unstainable farm practices that are geared only towards higher yields put more pressure on global issues, including climate change, soil erosion, and pollution of soil and water. In short, organic farming is important now more than ever! Continue reading to learn more about the importance of organic farming.
No Additives
Non-organic produce will often contain food additives such as preservatives, flavorings, and colorings to make them look more attractive to buyers. While these chemicals keep food fresh for a longer period of time, the long-term effects of regularly consuming non-organic produce are unknown but may have negative effects on your health.
No GMOs
GMOs, or genetically modified organisms, are used in non-organic farming to increase yields and combat diseases, pests, and weather conditions. GMOs are concerning, however, because of unknown health effects. While little research has been conducted on the health side effects, in rare cases, cancer has been linked to the altered chemical in food products, as humans have been consuming harmful bacterias and toxins.
Water Conservation
A significant water pollution threat to rivers in the United States is runoff from non-organic farms that contain harmful pesticides, toxic fertilizers, and animal waste. Poor water health is a huge issue, as it puts a lot of people at risk of health problems.
Organic farming also helps with water conservation, as most farmers spend time amending soil correctly and using mulch to conserve water. For example, cotton requires a lot of irrigation and excess water to grow, but organic cotton farming requires less irrigation, and as a result, conserves more water.
Better For The Environment
Organic farming is also much better for the environment since non-organic farmers use chemicals that contaminate water sources, habitats in the area, and the soil. The machinery used in non-organic farming also releases large amounts of CO2 into the environment.
The Rodale Institute Farming Systems Trial, America’s longest-running comparison of conventional and organic agriculture, has shown that a healthy organic farming system can reduce carbon dioxide and help slow climate change. In fact, the research shows that if 10,000 medium-sized farms in the U.S. adopted organic production, they would store so much carbon in the soil that it would be the equivalent of taking over 1.1 million cars off the road!
