As we move into spring and summer, warmer temperatures and bright sunshine, we also enter rosé wine season. Rosé may be a French word, but the wine is Italian at heart. Giolitti Deli’s wines remain available for purchase from our store, for curbside grocery pickup. Read on for what makes rosé special, and how you can enjoy it alongside some of your favorite Giolitti Deli dishes and ingredients.
The Characteristics of Rosé Wine
Rosé wines are named for their rosy color. Each sip of rose is crisp, semi-sweet, and very refreshing on a warm, sunny day. The colors range from pale orange to pink, to nearly violet, and each wine’s color is drawn from the grape varietals and vinification.
How Rosé Wine Is Made
In Italy, the majority of rosé wines are blends of red wine varietals, such as Sangiovese, Barbera, Freisa, Nebbiolo, and more. The wine is produced according to saignée, which is a short-maceration method in which the grapes are lightly crushed and then left to rest with the skins for any length between six hours and three days before being fermented. The longer the wine macerates with the grape skins, the darker and more tannic the rosé will be.
One important thing to note is that rosé wine is definitely not made by blending red and white wine. The European Union even went so far as to make this practice illegal in 2009!
How to Enjoy Rosé Wines
Like most Italian food and drink, the style of rosé will depend on the region. For instance, the northeastern Veneto is known for sweeter, more delicate rosé wines. The southwestern Calabria, however, produces drier and more full-bodied rosés.
Rosé wine is typically served chilled, and with its refreshing quality, the versatile wine complements a range of dishes. You can pair your rosé with creamy cheeses, cured meats, or fried seafood for an appetizer. Or, you can serve a bold, southern rosé with roasted chicken, grilled pork, or stewed fish. Rosé wine does not improve with age, so it’s best enjoyed right away! Stop by Giolitti Deli to pick up your rosé wine and your Italian meals to enjoy this spring.
