June has come to an end, and July is an excellent time to look back on the history of the LGBT movement to understand the significance of Pride month. Giolitti Deli is proud to support the LGBT cause and coming together as a community without discrimination! Continue reading to learn more about the history of Pride month and the importance of creating an inclusive community.
Origins Of Pride Month
The origin of the gay rights movement is often dated to June 28, 1969, when police arrived at a gay bar in New York City called the Stonewall Inn. At the time, homosexuality was considered a crime, and men could be arrested for dressing in drag while women could be arrested for wearing less than three pieces of “feminine clothing.” When the police arrived at Stonewall, the 200 patrons decided to send a strong message about their frustration with these laws and resisted arrested and rioted. Today, the Stonewall riots are considered as the most important events leading to the modern fight for LGBT rights in the U.S.
Businesses Supporting LGBT Community
June is officially recognized as Pride Month in the U.S., with a series of events and parades taking place in cities all over the country. You may have seen the rainbow LGBT flag prominently displayed throughout the month on social media, apparel, and in business windows to show that their establishment is a safe place for all members of the community. By showing their support for the LGBT community, business owners are helping to make a positive impact. It can also be profitable for businesses, as it has been repeatedly shown that Americans are more likely to buy from LGBT-inclusive companies. A business can support the community in a few simple steps, including creating a safe workplace for all employees, training staff on inclusion, and donating to LGBT institutions working on important causes in their local community. At Giolitti Deli, we show our support for the LGBT cause by creating a space that allows everyone to eat and drink together as a community without discrimination.
