The calzone is one of the most convenient ways to eat Italian food, as the half-pizza, half-sandwich is meant to be eaten with one hand. Calzones originated in Naples, and while they are not as popular as pizza, they are a great alternative! At Giolitti Deli, we serve calzones including Spinach and Cheese, Sausage, Peppers, and Cheese, and Pepperoni and Fresh Mozzarella for $8.95 each. Italian Food To Go
When calzones were first originated in Naples, they were designed to be eaten by hand, without any utensils. The half-moon shape of a traditional calzone indicates that it was made by simply folding over a single round of pizza crust. The toppings inside a traditional calzone were similar to those you would find on a pizza, including mozzarella cheese, meats such as ham or salami, and various vegetables. In Italy, you may find smaller calzones at an Italian lunch counter or street vendor, as they are a great choice for those who are standing or on the go.
Calzones In America
In the U.S., calzones are typically made from pizza dough and stuffed with variations of meats, cheese, and vegetables- or almost any toppings you like. Popular calzone flavors in America include classics such as pepperoni and sausage and peppers, or different flavors such as barbeque and buffalo chicken.
Calzone vs. Stromboli
Some people confuse the calzone and the stromboli, as they share similar ingredients. However, the stromboli was created in America in the 1950s and had a few differences. For example, stromboli consists of cheese, Italian meats, and a tomato-based sauce that are laid out on a sheet of pizza dough. The dough is then rolled up (rather than folded over) into a triangle and is finished in the oven or a fryer. Another main difference between the two is that strombolis contain sauce, while calzones typically come with sauce on the side for dipping.
